What is Stop Motion Studio?

Stop Motion Studio is an application that allows users to film, import photos, and edit your stop motion video. The technique of stop motion filming is where the objects are manipulated by the creators in small increments, whilst taking individual photos between each movement (Stop Motion Studio, 2023). The final film product will show a motion of each frame moving together to create the effect of the object moving itself. The application is a free download for IOS, android, windows and mac and an easy-to-use tool for students at all levels.

How can it be used in the classroom to foster creativity?

Stop Motion Studio can be used in the classroom to support students’ ability to create and produce skills for story telling and sequence of events. This is supported from the NSW science syllabus content; ST3-2DP-T plans and uses materials, tools, and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity (Science & technology NESA, 2017). For example, students can use stop motion during a lesson to recount a novel, lifecycle of an animal or text and apply their creative skills to produce a sequence of events through stop motion. This can be a great activity for group work to collaborate ideas between peers and allocate different roles for each student, for production, filming, creative arts for the making of characters.

Pedagogical Reflections

Using stop motion in a classroom is great for multimedia learning and a student’s working memory. Instructional material is processed using our eyes/ears and working memory, the two must be combined to develop and understanding of material. This can be developed through sound and spoken words, being processed through auditory working memory to the build referential connections, which is stored in long term memory (Bower, 2023).

Limitations

Limitations for stop motion can involve having access to iPads within schools to use the camera feature. Another drawback is using stop motion within younger stage groups as they will need more support for explanation and understanding.

Hi Madeline,

Great job with the post! The post was well-organized and informative. The suggested activity of using stop motion to recount a novel or the lifecycle of an animal is an excellent way to engage students in their learning and promote collaboration between peers.

I appreciate the pedagogical reflection on how using stop motion in the classroom can benefit students' working memory and multimedia learning. It's impressive how you tied in NSW science syllabus content to show how stop motion can be used to meet specific learning objectives.

Regarding limitations, it may have been beneficial to briefly discuss ways that younger students could be helped. Overall, this was a well-written post that effectively highlights the benefits and limitations of…

Hi Madeline!

You did an amazing job with your blog post and I really enjoyed watching your stop motion. I liked how you: explained Stop Motion Studio in detail, including what it is and how it may be used in the classroom to encourage creativity, particularly in the context of science education well. You also emphasised the advantages of stop motion for the improvement of working memory and multimedia learning. However, I think you should include more instances of how stop motion can be used in the classroom for various tasks or lessons. It would also be beneficial to go into more detail on stop motion's drawbacks, such as the requirement for access to devices with cameras and the potential…

A really entertaining Stop Motion animation! I also love the idea of delegating tasks amongst peers when it comes to working collaboratively in producing, filming and the making of characters in the animation. I would've loved to see more references to multimedia literacy, perhaps a mention of the instructions you would give to your class to avoid cognitive overload when using multimedia tools such as Stop Motion. Nonetheless a great job done!

I love the stop motion film you've created! You've clearly thought deeply about the ways that Stop Motion Studio can be used in the classroom, and I appreciate how you explained how it can be used with direct syllabus links.

I would've loved a little bit more information as to how student's creativity is fostered, but otherwise you have written a great post!
