What is iMovie?

iMovie is a video editing application that can be accessed through an iPad, computer or laptop. The digital app allows users to create book trailers, movies/short videos

, digital, storytelling, reports and more. The app includes a wide range of

features and is accessible for students from any age as it is designed for individuals with little to no editing experience. The application is free with no add on costs. Features also include instruction flags throughout the whole process to support its simple use to create text, transitions, music, input of photos and videos.

How does it foster creativity?

This digital technology can be used across various subjects as well as meeting the NSW science syllabus content, involving working scientifically. (Science & technology NESA, 2017). iMovie can enhance students creativity and bring a different exciting learning project to the classroom. iMovie allows students to have complete creative control when comes to individual projects or working collaboratively. Students can create digital story books using their own images or videos either taken in the classroom or at home. Creativity can be fostered through the use of effects, music, transition and text. Students are able to work together in groups to share ideas whilst supporting their listening and problem-solving skills.

Pedagogical Reflections:

Constructivism focuses on the leaner being able to self-direct, create and innovate. The educators role is to guide the leaner when faced with obstacles or challenges to help support existing knowledge ad allow creation of new knowledge (Bower, M, 2017). iMovie allows students to have control over how they wish to conduct their project and the possibilities of creativity are endless. The teacher is able to guide students through the process, yet only convene when needed to do so.

Limitations:

Whilst iMovie is a great digital tool to use in classroom and an easy application to access, there are limitations that come with using digital technologies in classrooms. Not all schools have access to the resources that iMovie is used on, typically a classroom iPad/laptop. Without access to iPads or enough computer monitors, students and schools will unfortunately suffer limitations. Whilst classrooms do have access to iPads, this type of digital technology may require more support to different groups of students who require more in depth learning needs. For example, earlier stages/ students with learning difficulties. More support requires more classroom time on a project, which may not be at the top of priorities.

Hi Madeline,

Excellent job with the blog! The blog was extremely engaging and I enjoyed how you structured the text. Your overall explanation of iMovie was clear and direct, and the use of the youtube tutorial video was a great inclusion.

Perhaps some further elaboration on how iMovie can foster creativity within the classroom would have added more depth to the post. A direct link to some NSW syllabus outcomes would also have been a good inclusion. Overall, a great informative blog, well done.

Hi Madeline,

The structure and language used in this blog make it both engaging and easy to follow. Your explanations of how iMovie operates offers clear insight into the general purpose of the technology. To enhance your blog, you could make more explicit links to how iMovie would foster creativity with reference to scholarship that defines the concept. You identify that the application can encourage creative thinking outside of the Science and Technology syllabus but an example with the specific learning context would offer the reader a clearer picture of how iMovie is promoting creativity.

This is such an interesting blog post and I really enjoyed it!
